What's the point of the pain? Why does the Lord allow us as His people to endure the pain of trouble and persecution? The Lord Himself gives an answer in Zechariah 13:7-9. When the Lord awakens His sword of suffering, He does so first to save us by sending that suffering to His Son. And in His grace, He also allows us to experience some of that suffering for ourselves, to purify us of our apathy and fear, and to strengthen our faith in Him.

Trying to keep the law doesn't save you--it kills you. It sounds incredible, but your salvation is sure and certain, a free gift of God that you receive through faith in Jesus Christ. All your sins are forgiven for the sake of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. Faith trusts in the forgiveness of sins--and that trust stands firm even when it feels uncomfortable to do so.

We struggle to deal with death. We often don't know what to say to those who are grieving. We don't even know how to feel sometimes, as our hearts turn cold and we live our self-centered lives. We feel helpless in the face of death as it comes after loved ones and neighbors, and then finally comes after us. Yet in Luke 7:11-17, we see Jesus perfectly deal with death in our place, as He raises to life the dead young man from Nain. He has the deepest compassion for the young man's grieving mother; He knows exactly what to say to bring comfort; and ultimately, Jesus is the only one who can do something about death to solve it. And thanks to Jesus, you and I also can now deal with death--with Jesus' compassion, with Jesus' comfort, and with Jesus' victory!
